Earlier in the month, we posted some of our favourite natural skin care ingredients on our Facebook page. We enjoyed the process so much we thought we’d wrote a longer blog post on some of our all-time favourite natural skin care ingredients. Almost all of these can be taken either internally or applied to the skin and offer an array of incredible health benefits.
Lime Juice
Lime juice, whether taken orally or applied topically, benefits your skin in several ways. Being rich in powerful antioxidants like Vitamin C, citric acid, and flavonoids, lime helps the appearance of the skin by helping to even out pigmentation. It is also antibacterial, reduces open pores, gently exfoliates dead cells and has amazing brightening properties. What a wonderful ingredient!
Lemongrass
The lemongrass plant is used in tea, soups and curries all around the world, and is also a popular essential oil. It is packed with vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 & folate to name a few) as well as essential minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Just some of its proven benefits include relief from respiratory and stomach disorders, keeping cholesterol under control and combating fatigue.
Honey
Not only is it delicious to eat, but honey has multiple health benefits. It is said to lighten skin, and its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds help to decrease the appearance of scars and increase healing and tissue regeneration. Other reported health benefits include its ability to reduce throat irritation, heal wounds and burns, and help with gastrointestinal disorders. However, it’s important to remember that not all honey is the same so make sure you do your research. Manuka honey is one of our favourites.
Lavender
Lavender is one of our all-time favourite ingredients. We love it’s calming properties and use it to soothe both mind and body. Lavender is known to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal for treating minor burns and bites. It can also be useful for treating dandruff, bloating and to calm itchy skin. If that’s not enough, lavender is also fantastic for helping you to relax. We find a diffuser works best.
Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil can be used externally as well as internally. Not only is it edible, but when absorbed by the skin it aids in smoothing and nourishing the skin. It also provides antibacterial properties and soothes inflammatory conditions such as bites and rashes. With a natural SPF to help protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, proven to burn and age the skin, this truly is a miracle ingredient!
